about

Featuring a solo by Radiance/Necrophagist guitarist, Sami Raatikainen

lyrics

For five stern years the faithful had advanced
The light of Vesper, starting in the West
To meet our sleepless stronghold in the East
That Justice, God and Truth had now arrived.
Yet the stubborn South denied
And intemperate North resisted
So wicked Marcus from the Great Lakes led
A rolling horde of fifty thousand men
Concealing from themselves the righteous Word
And blackening the skies with dust and ash
Chariots in glimm’ring plate
Driven with a savage thirst

Recall the Heathens’ bitter harvest
The wailing echoes still
The grinding corps, the ravaged cities
In their smold’ring wake
The hills of bodies, names forgotten
Left behind to rot
The mangled face of total warfare
Along the Winterscythe Road

The Second City was the first to fall
The miracle of Vesper’s peace undone
Then shattering the Gateway to the South
And City in a Forest burned again
He did pivot toward the coastal plain
And the sun behind him seemed to rise

Recall the Heathens’ bitter harvest
The wailing echoes still
The grinding corps, the ravaged cities
In their smold’ring wake
The hills of bodies, names forgotten
Left behind to rot
The mangled face of total warfare
Along the Winterscythe Road

Each small town left bleak and burnt
Along the blighted road
Tortured every man who knew
Where to find the hearts
Of coils, lamps and spires divine
That brought Vesper on the wind
To crush and melt; to silence her:
His futile design
And to the Port City he came
She stood defiant as ever
So began the siege
In six months starved and broken
The walls then breached, soldiers cascade, unleashed a bestial hunger
The murder and rape of a people entire

Recall the Heathens’ bitter harvest
The wailing echoes still
The grinding corps, the ravaged cities
In their smold’ring wake
The hills of bodies, names forgotten
Left behind to rot
The mangled face of total warfare
The mangled face of total warfare
At the end of Winterscythe Road
