Our Goddess knows all things
But could not penetrate the chaos,
The capricious madness of free will.
And so she called the council:

Their wisdom was unmatched; their beauty now a legend
Crowned with golden thread and wov’n into their flesh
They alone had merged with her, the guiding Evening Star

The first, the High Vicar, knew which chords to strike:
“Gather we our selfish boon and take the orphans’ cause.
Who would not bestow our gift on suff’ring proselytes?”

The prefect from the west answered out of turn, the rich, untempered youth, arrogant and restless:
“I know the elegance within our master’s sacred mind –
Give not the shepherd’s crook to sheep who hardly comprehend.”

“And deprive them of the flail?
You’re blinded to the angry scar
That Marcus carved into our land?”
Cried his southern counterpart

Even generals bickered:
The ash-haired Hayes of fortune’s favor sided with the West
The zealous convert Carrick differed, weary of defeat

The final Prefect, tycoon of the East, lingered no more:
“Behold our champion Edward,
Adept in countless arts
From medicine to war,
Arithmetic to verse.
He sees the hidden stream
Phlogiston in her veins
And speaks beyond his years
With knowledge deep and grim.”

Lastly he, the Starling spoke:
“Entrust our anguished flock with Vesper’s spark
That I may lead them with wrath from out of the dark.”
