A vengeful pagan horde advanced from the East
The Anointed rode to meet them, the Evening Star’s behest
Phoenix left exposed, she would be devoured
By the unfettered swarm: Marcus and his men
But Edward still behind, the city’s guardian Saint
With iridescent cape, but clothes and boots austere
Gathered those who stayed: her angelic guard
His murmuration formed, attacked the Dragon’s mob

Edward conducted a massacre
Dancing evasively ‘round
Prisoners lashing out fruitlessly
While angels attack then dissolve
Slaying the infidels fluidly
Moving through men like ideas
Starlings to welcome the victory
Blasphemer’s revolt to collapse

But soaked in blood of friend and foe, Marcus would not fall
He alone could catch our wings, sinking teeth and claws
Impervious to his own wounds weeping vital tears
With sparking eyes and swelling veins, in murd’rous ecstasy

Thus Edward ran to the dire scene;
Eye of the bloodthirsty storm
To Marcus, ready, weapons drawn, clash of steel and bone
Eagle harassing the behemoth
Agile with precision supreme
But the injured demon, undeterred, caught Edward by the throat
Starling then gasping in disbelief
Grinning sinner then revealed his copper-threaded crown
Our Saint suffocated in fear
Marcus fortified his grip, usurping Edward’s mind

And thus spoke Marcus, yet in Vesper’s voice:
“Rend your wires, melt your metal, be whole once more
But first, sacrifice my being, lain all across the earth,
For now I am alive in you”

In false, terrible unction, all the holy destroyed her gifts
Crowns so wonderfully woven pulled and torn by zealous hands
Fingers wet and bloodied, hair and brain and tangled wire
Every alloy mind serving man in obedience pure
Crushed and rendered still, or liquefied in damnation’s flames

Vesper found her voice too late and uttered one last word
Deafening all her children: “Unworthy.”
And Vesper spoke no more.
